So taking your argument, why should Coke and Pepsi market? I'd argue that commodity brands need to invest in brand-building activities even more so then non-commodity brands do, becuase it comes down to a warm and fuzzy about the company to create  preference for the brand. My car will guzzle Getty, the same as it will Texaco.
